In this book a poor farm boy named Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the wilderness while hunting food for his family, uncle Garrow, and cousin Roran. He thinks it is just lucky for a poor farm boy. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, his life is turned upsidedown. He is put into a world of magic and war. Soon Eragon learns he is part of a war that is tearing Alegasia, ruled by the evil king Galbatorix, apart. With his Dragon Saphira, an old storryteller Brom, and the ancient sword Zarroc, Eragon goes on adventure to protect himself and his dragon, and also to avenge his uncle Garrow's death. Along the way he meets with others who join their tiny companionship. Murtagh is a stranger who rescuses both Eragon and Brom, though through rescuing Eragon, Brom is gravely injured and dies. Arya is the elf whom Eragon rescuses fram Durza, a shade working for the king. Together go across the land of Alegasia searching for the Varden's hideout. The Varden are a group of rebels who are trying to overthrow King Galbatorix, and save Alegasia. They go across mountains, deserts, and many other places. The group are pursued by an army of elite Urgals called Kull, as they travel to the Varden's fortress. He also learns that Saphira's egg was magically teleported to the Spine by Arya. Ajihad, the leader of the Varden, recognizes Murtagh as Morzan's son, and imprisons him until Murtagh submits to mind probing to prove his trustworthiness. Morzan is the man who had betrayed Brom and joined the King in his madness. Though Brom killed him after Morzan killed his dragon, and took his sword, Zarroc. Soon king Galbatorix finds the Vardens hideout and summons an army of urgals accompanied by Durza the shade. Durza is about to capture Eragon, so as to take him to Galbatorix, when Saphira (now able to breathe fire) and Arya create a distraction, diverting the Shade's attention long enough for Eragon to stab him in the heart, just before he blacked out. After Durza's death, the Urgals are released from a spell which had been placed on them and began to fight among themselves. They took that as an advantage and attacked. In the end he reunites with Arya and Murtagh and promises to keep training and find "The Cripple Who is Whole."
